Viltrox AF 35mm F1.2 LAB N on Sony A7IV: Coffee Shop Portrait Session at CRÈME COFFEE Sacramento

The Viltrox AF 35mm F1.2 LAB N is Viltrox's latest flagship prime for Sony E-mount, and I've been wanting to put it through a real portrait session ever since I got it. The 35mm focal length at f/1.2 is a different experience from the classic 85mm — wider, more environmental, and when you're shooting indoors, it lets more of the location breathe into the frame.
For this session I brought model @andreailieva_5 to CRÈME COFFEE in downtown Sacramento. It's a beautiful space — warm wood tones, large street-facing windows, and great natural light at almost any time of day. The kind of location that makes a lens like this shine.

Window Portraits — Where This Lens Really Shines
The windows at CRÈME COFFEE face the street and flood the interior with soft, directional daylight — exactly the kind of light that flatters a fast prime. I positioned Andrea close to the window so the light would wrap around her face, create clean catchlights, and let the warm interior fall naturally into bokeh behind her.
At f/1.2, the 35mm doesn't compress the background the way an 85mm would — instead it draws you into the scene. You can feel the coffee shop around her, but nothing distracts from her.

The sharpness wide open surprised me even for a Viltrox. The eye and face detail at f/1.2 is genuinely crisp — no milky softness, just smooth bokeh transitioning into a sharp subject. The LAB N series clearly pushed the optical quality over the previous generation.

Natural Light Inside the Coffee Shop
Moving away from the windows and deeper into the space, the light softens considerably — more diffused, bouncing off the walls and the warm wood surfaces. This is where the Sony A7IV's eye-tracking AF really proved itself. Even in lower ambient light, it locked onto Andrea's eyes consistently and held focus through every shot.
The 35mm at f/1.2 in this environment creates a dreamy but grounded look — you can feel the texture of the space around her, the coffee shop atmosphere comes through, and the bokeh is still beautiful without being overwhelming.

Final Thoughts on the Viltrox AF 35mm F1.2 LAB N
The 35mm focal length is underrated for portrait work, and the LAB N takes it to a new level. A few things that stood out:
- Sharpness wide open — genuinely sharp at f/1.2, not just acceptable. Face and eye detail hold up.
- Bokeh — smooth and creamy. The transition from sharp to soft is gradual and pleasing, especially with interior light sources in the background.
- Autofocus — fast and accurate on the Sony A7IV. Eye detection tracked reliably throughout the session, including in the dimmer interior sections.
- 35mm versatility — great for environmental portraits where you want to show the location. A coffee shop, a staircase, a street — the 35mm puts you in the scene in a way that 85mm can't.
If you're a Sony shooter looking for a fast 35mm that punches well above its price, the Viltrox LAB N is worth a very serious look.
