Canon EOS R6 Mark II Custom Color Profile and Auto Focus Settings for Portraits

Just wanted to share the settings I use for color and autofocus when shooting portraits with my Canon EOS R6 Mark II. Let’s explore these modest yet effective adjustments that enhance my photography sessions!

1. AF Area Setting: When it comes to capturing dynamic subjects, the AF Area setting plays a crucial role. For most scenarios, utilizing the full area ensures maximum flexibility in focusing. However, there are occasions where precision is paramount, such as capturing portraits. In such cases, consider switching to the Zone AF mode to restrict focus to specific areas, like above the shoulder, for impeccable results.

2. AF Servo for Eye Tracking: The Canon EOS R6 Mark II boasts impressive eye-tracking capabilities, making it a game-changer for portrait and action photographers alike. By activating AF Servo mode for eye tracking, you can ensure that your subject's eyes remain tack-sharp, even in fast-paced environments. The eye box’s sticky nature ensures reliable focus, allowing you to concentrate on capturing the perfect moment.

3. Detect Mode: When it comes to Detect Mode, opting for Auto provides a hassle-free shooting experience. This setting allows the camera to intelligently analyze the scene and select the most appropriate focusing method, saving you valuable time and effort. Whether you’re shooting portraits or landscapes, Auto Detect Mode ensures consistent and reliable performance.

4. White Balance: Achieving accurate white balance is essential for producing true-to-life colors in your photographs. For a touch of warmth and enhanced skin tones, consider using a custom white balance setting. Setting the white balance to 6200K imparts a gentle warmth to your images, lending them a cozy and inviting atmosphere. This subtle adjustment can make a world of difference, particularly in portrait photography.

5. Metering Using Evaluative Metering: Metering plays a crucial role in determining the exposure of your photographs. For versatile and reliable metering, Evaluative Metering mode is your go-to option. This general-purpose metering mode excels in a variety of lighting conditions, including backlit scenes. By analyzing the entire frame, Evaluative Metering ensures accurate exposure, allowing you to capture well-balanced shots effortlessly.

6. Custom Profile Setting: Unleash your creativity with custom profile settings tailored to your preferences. By utilizing Custom 2 profile settings, you can fine-tune your camera’s behavior to suit your unique style. Setting the profile to A on the top dial and adjusting the Tone to -1 infuses your images with a subtle hint of red, enriching the color tones and adding depth to your photographs.

Below are some straight-out-of-camera (SOOC) JPEG samples showcasing the settings mentioned above. These images demonstrate the subtle warmth in skin tones, precise autofocus on the eyes, and balanced exposure achieved with these settings.
