Nikon Z6III + Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S: Fall Street Portraits with Sofia in Roseville

The Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S just arrived, so I wanted to try it out right away, and this was also my first time shooting with Sofia (@sofiadrachova). Before the shoot we went through a few fall outfit ideas to match the autumn tones of a small town complex in Roseville. Sofia did a great job putting this look together: a taupe wool jacket, black mini skirt, sheer tights and over-the-knee boots. It matched our fall vision perfectly, and she brought great vibes and energy the whole session.

We started around 4pm and shot until the sun got low, so the light went from strong and direct to warm and backlit over the hour. I shot every single frame wide open at f/1.2 and ISO 100, to see how this lens handles a real street session: backlight, bokeh, direct sun and moving subjects.

Sidewalk & Crosswalk

We started on a covered sidewalk with the storefront columns running off into the distance, then moved out to the crosswalk once the sun came around. At f/1.2 the 50mm separates her from a busy street more than I expected from a normal focal length, and it is still wide enough to keep the street in the story. Taupe wool jacket, black mini skirt, sheer tights and over-the-knee boots made an easy fall look.

Grey Wall by the Irish Pub

Around the corner, the dark grey wall of an Irish pub gave us a clean, moody backdrop. The warm jacket and blonde hair pop against the cool grey, and the black railing made a handy prop for a few leaning and kick-up poses.

White Brick Leading Lines

Next was a white brick wall under a covered walkway. The mortar lines and the roofline both run straight toward Sofia, which pulls the eye right to her, and the shade gave us soft, even light on her face.

Backlit Hair & Fall Tones

This was my favorite stop. With the sun low behind her, her hair lit up with a strong rim light. The beige and brown apartment buildings behind her match the jacket, so the whole frame feels like fall. Even shooting into the sun, the 50mm f/1.2 S held its contrast well.

Weathered Wood Wall

The weathered wood fence with rusty posts added warm brown tones that fit the fall look. The wood picks up the colors of the jacket, and the wall tapers away behind her for depth.

Direct Sunlight

For contrast I also tried a few frames in direct sun against a painted brick wall: harder shadows, stronger colors and a crisper street-style feel. Wide open in full sun the shutter went up to 1/6400s at ISO 100, so no ND filter needed on the Z6III.

Backlit Against the Wall

Same wall, turned around so the sun was behind her. The light is much softer, her hair glows at the edges and the street behind her melts into pastel colors.

Walking Street Style

A quick walking set across the street. The Z6III's eye-detection AF stayed locked on her at f/1.2 while she walked toward me, which is exactly what I wanted to test with a lens this fast.

String-Light Bokeh

Next to a restaurant patio, the string lights behind the railing turned into big round bokeh balls at f/1.2. This is the kind of shot you get this lens for.

Column Shadows

We finished under an arcade, with the sun low enough to cast long column shadows across the sidewalk. The repeating diagonal shadows make a natural pattern, and the backlight kept her hair glowing.

First Impressions: Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S

A few thoughts after the first full session with this lens:

• Sharp enough to shoot wide open all day. Every frame in this post is at f/1.2, and eyes and hair detail hold up. I never felt the need to stop down.
• 50mm still gives real separation at f/1.2. It keeps more of the street in the frame than an 85mm, but backgrounds still fall away smoothly. That makes it a great street portrait focal length when you want the location to be part of the story.
• Autofocus kept up with moving subjects. Paired with the Z6III, eye tracking held on Sofia while she walked toward me at f/1.2, so the walking sets were easy to nail.
• Backlight is where it shines. Shooting into the late afternoon sun, contrast held up well and the rim light on her hair looked great.
• Heavy, but it feels premium. It is noticeably heavier than a typical 50mm. The rubberized ring around the middle of the barrel is a nice touch that my 85mm f/1.2 S doesn't have. It feels good and comfortable in the hand, and on the Z6III the balance was fine for an hour-long walk-and-shoot session.
