Nikon Z6III + NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S: Stunning Portraits in Old Town Folsom

The NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S has been on my radar for a while, and after finally getting it on the Nikon Z6III for a full portrait session in Old Town Folsom, I can say it absolutely delivers. Model: @lupu.nicolleta.
The Lens at a Glance
The 85mm focal length is a classic for portraits — flattering compression, natural perspective, and enough working distance to keep the subject comfortable. The f/1.2 maximum aperture takes all of that a step further, producing some of the most beautiful out-of-focus rendering I've seen on a Z-mount lens.
At f/1.2, the bokeh is smooth and creamy without being nervous or busy. Background elements melt away completely, which works especially well in a location like Old Town Folsom where you have brick walls, storefronts, and street details that would otherwise compete with the subject.

Autofocus Performance
One thing I was genuinely impressed by is how confidently the Z6III locks onto eyes at f/1.2. With such a razor-thin depth of field, even a slight miss would ruin the shot — but the eye-detection autofocus tracked consistently through movement, changing light, and different angles. I came away with a much higher keeper rate than I expected shooting wide open.

Sharpness Wide Open
Despite the large aperture, the NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S is remarkably sharp wide open. Center sharpness is excellent and the transition from sharp to soft is gradual and pleasing — none of the harsh glow or softness you sometimes see from f/1.2 lenses of earlier generations. Nikon's S-line optical engineering really shows here.

Great for Full Body Portraits
The 85mm focal length shines for full body and 3/4 shots. The compression keeps proportions flattering and the background separation works just as well when you step back for a wider frame. This is something I wasn't always sure about with f/1.2 lenses — sometimes you feel forced to shoot tight to show off the bokeh — but this lens handles full body elegantly.

Old Town Folsom as a Backdrop
Old Town Folsom is a great location for portraits — historic brick buildings, tree-lined streets, and lots of natural texture that the 85mm renders beautifully out of focus. The location adds depth and character without distracting from the subject.

Final Thoughts
The NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S is one of the best portrait lenses I've used. The combination of f/1.2 bokeh, wide-open sharpness, and reliable autofocus on the Z6III makes it a near-perfect tool for portrait work. It's a heavy lens and the price reflects its optical ambition, but if portraits are your primary focus, it's hard to argue against it.
Big thanks to @lupu.nicolleta for bringing such great energy to this shoot in Old Town Folsom.
