Sony A7IV + Samyang AF 135mm F1.8: Downtown Street Portraits with Aranza

Linked back up with Aranza (@aranzamoratv) for another session — we go way back on a collab, and it had been too long. This time we stayed downtown and worked a handful of different street backdrops on the Sony A7IV, mainly on the Samyang AF 135mm F1.8. About halfway through I swapped in the Sigma 85mm F1.4 Art for a different outfit and a wider look, then went right back to the 135mm for the rest of the afternoon.

Downtown Colonnade

First stop was a shaded colonnade downtown — even, diffused light bouncing between the columns on both sides, which let the 135mm melt the receding archway into a long, soft tunnel of bokeh behind her.

City Breezeway — Black Dress

Moved a block over to a narrow breezeway between two buildings — clean vertical lines, warm bounce light off the walls, and just enough width for full body poses working the boots and the black dress against all that structure.

I Had the Sigma 85mm F1.4 in My Bag

Aranza changed into a white tank top and denim skirt for a completely different vibe, so I swapped over to the Sigma 85mm F1.4 Art for this stretch — a little wider, a little different rendering, and it matched the more casual, daytime feel of the outfit change perfectly.

Golden Hour — Back on the 135mm

Back into a brown dress and back on the Samyang for the last stretch, working another set of downtown arches as the light started turning gold. This ended up being the biggest set of the day — different angles, different distances, chasing that warm backlight as it dropped.

Samyang AF 135mm F1.8 on the Sony A7IV

A few thoughts after a full afternoon bouncing between city backdrops on this lens:

Compression does a lot of the work downtown. Busy street backgrounds — columns, breezeways, parked cars — all fall away into smooth, simple shapes at f/1.8, which keeps the eye on Aranza even in a fairly cluttered environment.
135mm needs room, but downtown gave us plenty. Every location had enough distance to work with, and the extra reach kept me far enough back that Aranza could move naturally between poses without me crowding the frame.
The quick swap to the Sigma 85mm was a nice reminder of how different 85mm and 135mm feel on the same body — the 85mm pulls more environment into frame and renders a touch differently, which matched the more relaxed, daytime energy of that outfit change well.
