Tips and Tricks on Summer Style Portrait Locations and Color Palettes

Updated: Jul 17, 2020

In this blog post, I am going to walk through some of my reasoning on why I chose particular color palettes and locations for my recent photoshoot with Rosina. I am going to go through the following points.

  • Summer Color Palettes

  • Location choices

Below is the behind the scenes video for this Summer style portraits shoot just in case you haven't seen it yet.

Summer Color Palettes & Location Choices

I chose some lighter colors and some summer flowers pink colors to match the summer vibes and outfits. I will show some of the example I generated from Palette Cam app just in case you want some inspirations for your own shoots.

1. Light blue sky matches the light brown dry grass field. These two sets of colors create contrast of the cold and warm tones. I chose this location because it had nice airy foreground and wide open sky in the back.

2. Here is another shot in the same dry grass location with a different outfits. This time, the outfit is white dress. White dress usually works nicely in the summer.

3. The final set is a flowery style dress. I found a big flowers tree in the Sacramento Land Park area when we were driving by. I thought these pink flowers will be a great match for the dress. The main palette from the dress and the pink flowers background are similar. Pink against dark green background will standout the portraits as well.

In summary, in order to get the summer feeling, I have to consciously choose some airy color palettes and lighter cold/warm contrasts. When you are walking around the neighborhood, make sure to look around and mark down any interesting background or any light colors that might be helpful for your upcoming shoots.
