Nikon Z5 II + NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S — Western Portraits in Old Town Auburn

Second round with the Nikon Z5 II — this time paired with the NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S for a portrait session with a western fashion vibe, shot on location in historic Old Town Auburn, California. Model: @lupu.nicolleta.
This lens combo delivers incredibly smooth subject separation and creamy bokeh wide open — perfect for that cinematic, dreamy portrait look. In the video above I break down how the Z5 II's autofocus handled the 85mm f/1.2 in natural light, my exposure settings, and how the Old Town backdrop — brick walls, warm tones, golden hour light — complemented the western-inspired styling.

Session Breakdown
Rustic Boardwalk — Cowboy Hat
We started under a wood-post covered walkway with warm afternoon light. This is where the western styling really sets in — a white suede cowboy hat, black bodysuit, and red knee-high boots against rustic wood and stone. The 85mm f/1.2 melts the background into soft color blocks whether Nicoleta is seated on the bench or standing against the posts, giving full-body and close-up shots in the same spot.

One More on the Bench
Before we moved on, a few last frames back on that same brick-and-bench corner — Nicoleta settling into looser, more relaxed poses as the light started to shift toward evening.

Street Style — Leopard Kimono
We swapped the hat for a red-and-leopard print kimono and moved to an open, tree-lined sidewalk for a looser, more editorial street style set. The kimono adds movement and color against the black bodysuit, and the open background lets the 85mm f/1.2 stretch out its compression at a bit more distance.

Old Town Brick — Golden Hour
We closed out the session against Old Town Auburn's weathered brick walls right at golden hour. This is where the lens combo really shines — warm, low-angle light raking across the brick texture, completely dissolved in the out-of-focus areas, with Nicoleta lit in that soft orange glow. The Z5 II's autofocus held eye detection steady through the whole set, even as the light kept shifting.

Verdict
The NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S on the Z5 II is a serious portrait combo. Subject separation is some of the smoothest I've seen on Z-mount, autofocus stayed locked through changing light and movement, and the Old Town Auburn backdrop — brick, wood, warm tones — gave the western styling exactly the kind of texture it needed without ever fighting for attention in the frame.
If you're considering the NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S for portrait work, or want to see more real-world Z5 II sample results, this session should give you a good sense of what the pairing can do.
