Behind the Scenes
Tea Time Portraits at Vampire Penguin Folsom — Lumix S5ii + Sigma 50mm F1.2

Vampire Penguin in Folsom is already a dreamy location on its own — soft pink interiors, delicate desserts, warm ambient light. Add a flowing skirt, the right model energy, and a lens with buttery bokeh, and you have everything you need for a tea time portrait session that feels like a fairy tale.
Model @xoxo.mia brought the perfect princess energy to this shoot — the skirt silhouette, the shoes, the way she carries herself in soft light. The whole look matched the Vampire Penguin vibe perfectly.
The Setup
Location: Vampire Penguin Folsom — a dessert café with cozy tea time vibes and a naturally photogenic interior
Camera: Panasonic Lumix S5ii
Lens: Sigma 50mm F1.2 DG DN Art
Model: @xoxo.mia
Why the Sigma 50mm F1.2 Works Here
The 50mm focal length gives you just enough compression to flatter a full-length portrait while keeping the background context readable — you can see the café atmosphere behind the subject without it competing for attention. At F1.2, the bokeh is smooth and creamy, letting those pink interior details blur into soft shapes rather than distractions.

Lumix S5ii Autofocus — Phase Detect Makes It Easy
Indoor café sessions can be tricky for autofocus — mixed light sources, busy backgrounds, a subject moving between tables. The Lumix S5ii's phase-detect AF handled all of it without hesitation. Subject tracking stayed locked through movement, and eye-detect rarely lost focus even when Mia turned slightly away from the camera. No hunting, no missed shots.

Color Tones Straight from the Camera
One thing that stands out every time I shoot with the Lumix S5ii is how good the color science is out of the box. The warm pinks of the Vampire Penguin interior came through naturally — skin tones looked clean and flattering without heavy post-processing. The camera's color rendering just works for this kind of warm, romantic lighting environment.

The Princess Aesthetic
The concept for this shoot was simple: let the location and the outfit tell the story. Mia's skirt and shoes leaned into the tea-party princess aesthetic naturally, and the Vampire Penguin décor — the tiered dessert stands, the soft lighting, the pink tones — all supported it without needing elaborate staging. Sometimes the best shoots are the ones where everything just fits.

The Details
No portrait session at a dessert café is complete without capturing what makes the location special. The desserts at Vampire Penguin are as photogenic as the interior — the sigma's close focusing ability let me get in tight on the details with the same F1.2 character.

If you're looking for a fun and unique location for your next portrait session in the Sacramento area, Vampire Penguin Folsom is worth checking out — the atmosphere does half the work for you.
